Barrupu Yunupingu: The Memory of Fire

On the 5th April I was invited to the opening event for Barrupu Yunupingu: The Memory of Fire at Alcaston Gallery on Brunswick St.

Barrupu Yunupingu, sister of acclaimed artist Gulumbu Yunupingu made the long journey from Yirrkala, NT to officially launch her exhibition of bark paintings and larrakitj, accompanied by Will Stubbs, Coordinator, Buku-Larrnggay Mulka Centre.

"While Gulumbu Yunupingu paints her universe - a night sky, star by star - Barrupu paints an important design of the Gumatj clan: gurtha, or fire. Barrupu reveals sacred ancestral knowledge through her artistic practice, as her fiery nature and unique style explodes onto the bark, transforming it into a powerful and important artwork"

In The Memory of Fire which consists of natural ochres on bark, we see the diamond patterning of the ‘miny’tji’ a sacred design of the Gumatj clan. It conjures an image of fire; the red flames, the white smoke and ash, the black charcoal and the yellow dust. The layering of this pattern upon the organic bark surface creates a strong sense of movement, as I gaze at each painting I imagine flames dancing and can almost hear the crackle of a fire.
